New research to examine role of aerosols in climate change

September 8th, 2008

A group of scientists affiliated with the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) have proposed a new framework to account more accurately for the effects of aerosols on precipitation in climate models. The increase in atmospheric concentrations of man-made aerosols-tiny particles suspended in the air-from such sources as transportation, industry, agriculture, and urban land use not only poses serious problems to human health, but also has an effect on weather and climate.

Recent studies suggest that increased aerosol loading may have changed the energy balance in the atmosphere and at the Earth’s surface, and altered the global water cycle in ways that make the climate system more prone to precipitation extremes.

It appears that aerosol effects on clouds can induce large changes in precipitation patterns, which in turn may change not only regional water resources, but also may change the regional and global circulation systems that constitute the Earth’s climate.

The proposed framework improves scientists’ ability to simulate present and future climates by integrating, for the first time, the radiative and microphysical effects of aerosols on clouds.

The radiative effects of aerosols on clouds mostly act to suppress precipitation, because they decrease the amount of solar radiation that reaches the land surface, and therefore cause less heat to be available for evaporating water and energizing convective rain clouds.

Microphysical effects of aerosols can slow down the conversion of cloud drops into raindrops, which shuts off precipitation from very shallow and short-lived clouds.

Model simulations suggest that this delay of early rain causes greater amounts of cloud water and rain intensities later in the life cycle of the cloud.

This suggests that rain patterns are shifting, leading to possible drought in one area and flooding downwind in another area. In addition, greater cooling below and heating above leads to enhanced upward heat transport.

Model simulations have shown that greater heating in the troposphere enhances the atmospheric circulation system, shifting weather patterns due to changes convective activity.

Investigations of aerosol/precipitation effects are especially relevant to policy issues, as effects on the hydrological cycle may affect water availability, a great concern in many regions of the world.

The IPCC, in its latest climate change assessment report, declared aerosols to be “the dominant uncertainty in radiative forcing”.

Therefore, aerosols, clouds and their interaction with climate are still the most uncertain areas of climate change and require multidisciplinary coordinated research efforts.

To that end, the team of scientists is participating in a new, international research project designed to study the connections between aerosols, clouds, precipitation and climate

Police recommend criminal charges against Olmert

September 8th, 2008

Israeli police said on Sunday Prime Minister Ehud Olmert should face criminal charges, issuing a non-binding recommendation in a corruption scandal driving him from office in the midst of peace talks with the Palestinians.”Police today recommended to indict Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in two separate cases,” said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

The police said they have evidence showing that Olmert illegally received money from a U.S. businessman and made duplicate claims for travel expenses while he previously served as mayor of Jerusalem and trade and industry minister.

Olmert’s lawyers called the police recommendation “meaningless” because only the attorney-general can decide whether or not to indict a prime minister.

“We will wait patiently for the attorney-general’s decision, and as opposed to the police, we have no doubt in our hearts he is well aware of the responsibility he carries,” the lawyers said in a statement.

With Olmert committed to resigning after his Kadima party holds a leadership vote on Sept. 17, the recommendation will have no immediate impact on his tenure and does not guarantee an indictment will be filed by Israel’s attorney-general.

He has denied any wrongdoing in a series of investigations.

Under Israeli law, police submit their recommendation to the prosecution which then files its own legal opinion to Attorney-General Menachem Mazuz, who is the only one authorised to indict a prime minister.

A prosecution source said it would take at least several weeks for Mazuz to decide.

Indian-American led team secures networks from hackers

September 5th, 2008

A Florida Atlantic University team led by Indian-American Avinash Srinivasan has developed a system that would protect sensitive wireless sensor networks (WSN), engaged in military surveillance, from cyber-attacks.These WSNs are also extensively used in detection of anti-terrorist activities, hurricanes, earthquakes and forest fires.

The first kind of attack is the fabricated report in which phoney data is sent to the base station with forged validation. Authorities monitoring a WSN for impending disaster are faced with a quandary. If the data arriving from the network is validated but false, how can they know for sure?

Conversely, the second kind of attack seeks to falsify genuine incoming data. How would those monitoring the WSN know whether genuine data is being labelled as false.

Srinivasan and colleagues Feng Li and Jie Wu pointed out that existing WSN systems have built-in software that can ward off the first kind of attack so that false data usually cannot be given valid credentials and those monitoring the system will be able to spot subterfuge easily.

However, WSNs are vulnerable to the second kind of attack, so that a genuine impending disaster cannot be verified remotely, which defeats the purpose of a WSN.

The Florida team has now devised a Probabilistic Voting-based Filtering Scheme (PVFS) to deal with both of these attacks simultaneously. They used a general en-route filtering scheme that can achieve strong protection against hackers while maintaining normal filtering to make the WSN viable.

These findings were published in the International Journal of Security and Networks.

The scheme breaks WSNs into clusters, and locks each cluster to a particular data encryption key. As data reaches headquarters from the WSN clusters, the main cluster-heads along the path checks the report together with the votes, acting as the verification nodes in PVFS.

The verification node is set up so that it will not drop a report immediately it finds a false vote, instead it will simply record the result. Only when the number of verified false votes reaches a designed threshold will a report be dropped.

This way, should a saboteur compromise one or more sensors on any given WSN to launch an attack, the PVFS will apply probability rules to determine the likelihood that this has happened. It will do so based on data arriving from other sensors in different clusters before reporting incoming data as false.

Detecting compromised sensors in a WSN in this way is of vital important to homeland security as well as successfully tracking natural events with the potential to devastate cities.

We will do anything to launch Nano: Ratan Tata

September 5th, 2008

Breaking his silence on the Singur row, Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata said on Thursday, he is “doing everything possible” to launch Nano car as planned.

He will meet the PM in the evening at 6.30pm as a part of the delegation visiting Siam with him.

Meanwhile, in the run-up to the crucial talks to resolve the Singur impasse, West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi on Thursday began preliminary discussions with the state government and Opposition Trinamool Congress even as the Trinamool Congress’ indefinite agitation entered its 12th day.

As part of the exercise, the Governor also held parleys with Sudip Bandopadhyay, chairman of the Assembly Standing Committee on Commerce and Industry.

The state’s Industry Minister, Nirupam Sen, accompanied by Panchayat Minister Surya Kanta Mishra met the Governor at Raj Bhavan apparently to prepare the groundwork for tomorrow’s talks to end the deadlock, Raj Bhavan sources here said.

Chief Secretary of the state Amit Kiran Deb and Home Secretary Ashoke Mohan Chakraborty were also present at the meeting.

The sources, however, refused to divulge what transpired in their meeting with the Governor.

Later, a Trinamool delegation, led by Opposition leader Partha Chatterjee, held talks with Gandhi. Gandhi has agreed to preside over the talks between a government panel and a five-member Trinamool delegation, but he declined to be viewed as a third party mediator.

The Governor’s decision to chair the meeting came following requests from Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Mamata Banerjee to mediate personally to find a solution to the prolonged deadlock that threatened to derail the setting up of the Tata Motors’ car plant which is set to roll out the world’s cheapest car.

Meanwhile, the situation in Singur remained peaceful, though the dharna site was thronged by the usual crowd that has been turning up regularly for the last 12 days.

Boeing workers back strike; pact extended 2 days

September 4th, 2008

Boeing Company aircraft assembly workers voted overwhelmingly to strike for the second time in three years but union leaders agreed to hold off on the walkout for 48 hours at the request of Washington Gov Chris Gregoire and a federal mediator.

The vote late Wednesday was 87 percent in favor of a strike that was to have begun at 12:01 am PDT Thursday, after the expiration of the old contract covering more than 27,000 workers.

With the extension, Boeing spokesman Tim Healy said the two sides would meet with a federal mediator Thursday.

In separate balloting, union members also voted 80 percent to reject Boeing’s third three-year contract offer, which included pay raises averaging 11 percent.

The offer, which Boeing described as its “best and final,” included bonuses totalling at least USD 5,000, raises averaging 11 percent, pension increases and a 3 percent cost-of-living adjustment — USD 34,000 in average pay and benefit gains per employee, according to the company.

Announcement of the 48-hour extension at the machinists union hall drew booing and shouting from about 100 angry shop stewards and other activists that frequently made it impossible for Mark Blondin, the union’s chief negotiator, and Tom Wroblewski, president of Machinists District Lodge 751, to be heard.

“We have told you all along that our job as negotiators is to negotiate a contract that is acceptable to you, not to negotiate a strike,” Blondin said.

When the shouting subsided, he said Boeing would have to come up with a substantially better offer to avoid a walkout.

Another Boeing spokesman, Jim Proulx, would not say whether Boeing would sweeten its offer.

“We’re disappointed that the IAM opted to reject what is truly an excellent package,” Proulx said. “We agreed to focus on the key issues … on understanding their key concerns.”

Blondin left no room for doubt when confronted by Randy Carroll, a mechanic in Auburn, after the announcement.

“If we can’t do it in 48 hours, brother, it’s on,” Blondin said.

“He’s got a division within his union and that’s not good,” Carroll said after Blondin left. “It’s really iffy what’s going to happen.”

Some union members may walk out despite the extension, he warned.

“You don’t get a strike vote and then go back,” Carroll said.

He would not predict how many might disregard the stay-at-work directive, though.

Other union leaders supported the extension.

“I think the involvement of the governor of that state and federal mediators is a good thing,” said Steve Rooney, president of Machinists District 70 in Wichita.

Analysts say a strike could cost Boeing about USD 100 million per day in deferred revenue. In 2005, Boeing was unable to deliver more than two-dozen airplanes as scheduled because of that strike.

Exercise Aids

September 4th, 2008

Exercise is a tough thing for many people to pick up quickly. It can be an exhausting experience that leaves you sore and drained of energy. You then just feel worse than before. Many will give up on an exercise platform for this very reason, but this will just make their previous problems worse. If you want to lose weight but can’t because of these exercise issues, then you should look at a good addition to your supplement system.

The easiest is the ECA stack. It targets all the issues that people usually have with losing weight by combining ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin for one powerful herbal mix. This is made specifically to curb your appetite and increase your metabolism while aiding your poor muscles. It is just for people who need a serious supplement, but it is good at what it does. ECA extreme is just one popular version of this. It operates off the exact principles above while providing a good does of ephedra at the optimal amount.

A green stinger is another possibility. At the end, it is basically the same as the above model. One pill a day gives you ephedra for weight loss and then caffeine for the energy boost. It is a bit more pure version of a basic pick-me-up.

These are at least two viable options for a boost to your exercise plan.

Business Cards for Contact

September 4th, 2008

Today’s world has some of the most advanced telecommunications technology available at our fingertips. Unfortunately, this has generally weaved a massive web of information that is hard to present in any coherent matter. Writing down all your possible contact numbers and addresses just makes things awkward and drawn out. Amongst friends, it isn’t a big deal. Businessmen and contractors can’t afford this luxury.

Business card printing isn’t a new way to advertise your contact information. It’s been around for years. The idea is really simple. If they write down your information, they have a greater likelihood of losing the nondescript paper amongst a stack of random paper. Having a nice card with all your information on it works better. They can have everything they need in one convenient little card. It can be put aside in a safe place and retrieved once their decision is made.

Business cards printing is ideal for any contractor in today’s world. With price shopping at an all time high, you are going to need to stand out amongst your competitors. Using a nice business card will complete your professional look while placing your contact details in a safe and convenient location. That way they won’t have to scramble to find the number of their favorite contractor. You don’t want to lose a sale because of a miscommunication.

Conservatory Blinds and Conservatory Awnings

September 4th, 2008

Conservatory blinds are similar to curtains which are used in windows. People who prefer sophistication in their house uses such kind of blinds. Blinds are better than curtains as they provide good appearance and good atmosphere. They are made up of different kind of materials. Flexible blinds can be folded or rolled easily. Such operations can be done either manually or using remote controls and wall switches. They help us to create a cool atmosphere in the time of summer and also maintain the heat inside the room during winter. They also enhance the appearance of the place to a great extent. These blinds are also stuffed with soft materials and used for beds.

Now days we can see houses having conservatory awnings. They are nothing but a secondary covering formed on the building. These coverings are made of canvas or polyester materials. They are generally found on the top of the window or a door. Awnings are also used in restaurants for covering the outdoor dinning areas during outdoor parties or receptions. These Awnings are also painted and used as bill boards in commercial buildings. They also act as a shade in the time of summer.

Heavily Hyped Spore Near Release With Big Expectations

September 4th, 2008

Will Spore be the biggest thing to hit the gaming world since Doom? Electronic Arts dearly hopes so. The long-awaited game by Sims creator Will Wright has so much hype surrounding it that anything less than a home run will be a disappointment, say game-industry watchers.

Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities, told The Wall Street Journal that between the cost of developing the game and marketing it, EA needs to rake in $75 million with Spore. Pachter expects EA to sell two million copies by the end of the year.

Marketing the game, which comes out in Europe on Friday and the U.S. on Sunday, is a challenge for EA’s marketers since the game seems to encompass the evolution of life on Earth from primordial stew to space exploration.

“If you told somebody you were going to be playing a game where you controlled life from a primordial soup to intergalactic travel and you have responsibility for the entire galaxy, that can seem like a pretty daunting task,” Patrick Buechner, vice president of marketing for EA’s Maxis unit, told the Journal.

Preloading Sales

EA is also making the game available online. In order to lighten the load on EA’s download servers on launch day, the company is hoping customers will download (and pay for) the game now, even though it won’t be operational until launch day. The download is expected to take 30 to 60 minutes.

EA isn’t releasing a demo version of the game, but is offering software called the Spore Creature Creator, which allows users to create their own life forms for the Spore universe. The software has already been downloaded three million times, a pretty good indicator that the game is on track to generate the same worldwide appeal of The Sims.

And Creature Creator may be coming to a computer near you. Under a marketing deal with Hewlett-Packard, the PC giant will install the Spore software on new consumer-oriented desktops and laptops.

A Creativity Hub

The scope of the game is nothing less than the evolution of humanity. “From tide pool amoebas to thriving civilizations to intergalactic starships, everything is in your hands,” the promotional text says.

Creature Creator may serve as the hub of an entire Spore ecosystem, Wright told Wired.com during a visit earlier this year. “I might decide I want to just buy the trading card of my creature … and never buy the PC game,” he said. “So in some sense that free creature editor might become the hub of the franchise. The PC game is just one of the spokes off that hub.”

Unlike immersive war games, Spore, while it may prove to be addictive, is a natural application for smartphones and other handheld devices. But for now, EA is focusing on the huge PC market. It is planning to release versions for cell phones and Nintendo’s DS handheld system, but the company is mum on whether it will be available for gaming consoles like Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation.

The game could have some smartphone potential, said Greg Sterling, principal analyst with Sterling Market Research, in a telephone interview. “While there’s nothing new about being able to create your own characters, the ability to be futzing with your characters on a mobile device could be interesting,” Sterling said. “The iPhone has emerged as a global gaming platform already.”

Google polishes product line with Chrome browser

September 3rd, 2008

The new Web browser that Google Inc. released Tuesday is designed to expand its huge lead in the Internet search market and reduce Microsoft Corp.’s imprint on personal computers.

The free browser, called “Chrome,” is being promoted as a sleeker, faster, safer and reliable alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, which has been the leading vehicle for surfing the Web for the past decade. Despite recent inroads by Mozilla Foundation’s Firefox, Internet Explorer is still used by roughly three-fourths of the world’s Web surfers.

“What we want is a diverse and vibrant ecosystem,” Google co-founder Sergey Brin told reporters Tuesday during Chrome’s unveiling. “We want several browsers that are viable and substantial choices.”

Among other features, Chrome’s navigation bar — the space where you type in an Internet address — will serve a dual purpose. Users can either enter an address into the space or type a search request that will be processed through their search engine of choice.

Naturally, Google bets it will be the default search engine for the majority of Chrome users, helping to build upon its nearly 64 percent share of the worldwide search market.

“You only have 24 hours a day and we would like you to do more searches,” Google’s other co-founder, Larry Page, said at the unveiling. “If the browser runs well, then you will do more searches.”

And more queries generate more revenue for Google, whose search engine is the hub of the Internet’s largest advertising network.

Google also is counting on Chrome to become the linchpin in its effort to distribute widely used computer programs like word processing, spreadsheets and calendars through the Web browser instead of as applications installed on individual machines. If the crusade is successful, it might undercut Microsoft’s profits by diminishing sales of its Office software package.

“Chrome will strengthen the Web as the biggest application platform in the world,” predicted Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive of the company that makes the Opera browser, which ranks a distant fourth in the market.

Microsoft, which crushed Netscape Communications to win the last major browser war in the 1990s, played down the threat posed by Chrome. Microsoft predicted that most people will embrace its latest version, Internet Explorer 8, which it released in test status last week.

But Benchmark Co. analyst Brent Williams thinks Microsoft has cause for concern. In a Tuesday research note, Williams described Chrome as a “a new, potentially significant, challenge to Microsoft’s Web strategy and to (Microsoft’s) core product suite, and indeed to (Microsoft’s) business model.”

Microsoft shares fell 19 cents to $27.10 Tuesday while Google shares gained $1.96 to $465.25.

Chrome may lure even more users from Firefox, which has grabbed more than 10 percent of the browser market with the help of an advertising and search alliance with Google. The ad partnership was recently extended through 2011.

Because Chrome and Google both are built on similar “open-source” models that share computer coding with outside developers to foster innovation, the products are likely to appeal to similar subsets of Web surfers looking for alternatives to Internet Explorer.

“If there is a casualty in the browser wars, it’s likely to be Mozilla’s Firefox,” the Info-Tech Research Group predicted Tuesday.

Google executives emphasized that they wouldn’t have been able to build Chrome during the past two years without the inroads already made by Firefox, and expressed hope that the two browsers will blend the best features from both products.

“I hope big chunks of Chrome make it into the next generation of Firefox,” Brin said.

In a blog posting, Mozilla CEO John Lilly said he had been expecting Google to enter the browser market for some time and predicted that Firefox would continue to hold its own.

“It should come as no real surprise that Google has done something here — their business is the Web, and they’ve got clear opinions on how things should be, and smart people thinking about how to make things better,” Lilly wrote.

Chrome hopes to set new standards for browsers by enabling Web pages and applications to run on separate tabs that won’t crash if there is a problem on another tab. The tabs also can be moved around on a page or even placed on a computer desktop.

The browser also will remember a user’s favorite destinations and automatically display the nine most visited Web sites in a tab. For users who don’t want someone else with access to the same computer to know where they have been, Chrome also includes an “incognito” tab that conceals the Web surfing activity.

Internet Explorer has a built-in advantage Chrome and other competing Web browsers because it’s pre-installed on the hard drives of most computers running on Microsoft Windows.

Although Chrome currently must be downloaded over an Internet connection, Google plans to explore deals that would pre-install its browser, too. Those arrangements conceivably could drive up Google’s expenses, but Brin thinks it will be worth the investment if Chrome encourages people to spend more of their lives online.

“Our business does well if there is healthy Internet usage,” Brin said.
