NASA satellite data to improve dust storm predictions

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Scientists have said that NASA satellite data can improve forecasts of dust storms in the American Southwest in ways that can benefit public health managers.

Led by investigators Stanley Morain of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and William Sprigg of the University of Arizona in Tucson, scientists evaluated the influence of space-based observations on predictions of dust storms.

Using NASA satellite data, forecasters could more accurately predict the timing of two out of three dust events.

NASA’s Public Health Applications in Remote Sensing project, or PHAiRS, released a report on the study this month.

Such forecasting capability is the first step toward a reporting system that health officials could use to warn at-risk populations of health threats and respond quickly to dust-related epidemics.

“The program has been successful in its work to improve dust storms predictions, which has important implications for air quality and respiratory distress warnings,” said John Haynes, Public Health Applications program manager at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Dust and the pathogens it carries have been blamed for exacerbating some cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, including asthma.

NASA launched PHAiRS in 2004 to identify how satellites could help modeling and forecasting of dust storms and to enhance a computer-based system that health managers can use to report and respond to dust-related health symptoms.

Through PHAiRS, up-to-date measurements of Earth’s surface features - collected from instruments on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites - provided the critical details needed to enhance an existing dust model.

The team began with an existing model that describes how dust is lifted off the ground and carried in the atmosphere.

Researchers coupled this model with an operational weather forecast model the U.S. National Weather Service created.

The team adapted the model to accommodate dust storms in the U.S. Southwest and then introduced the new satellite-derived measurements.

After using the new model to make hourly dust forecasts for California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas during dust events, the team compared their results to real-world observations.

They found that the NASA data improved the model estimates of wind speed, direction, near-surface temperature, and the location and amount of dust lifted off the ground.

Statistics for the model’s performance show that between January and April 2007, the timing of two out of three dust storms in Phoenix could be forecasted precisely.

The satellite-enhanced system would allow health and environmental managers to “see” the next 48 hours of dust concentrations for their areas and track the number of respiratory distress situations that result.

Ultimately, the system could allow health officials to issue early warnings to populations at risk for dust-related health complications.

‘Cold, Diwali won’t bring any respite from dengue’

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Don’t expect cold weather, cracker fumes or the MCD to smoke out Aedes aegypti, the day-biting mosquito that causes dengue. It seems only you can make a difference, and the MCD is counting on that.

“People should not hope that colder weather or fumes from crackers on Diwali would smoke away the mosquitoes. In the past, dengue cases have been reported in Delhi till December so people it is up to Delhi residents to ensure they don’t allow fresh water to stagnate,” said N.K. Yadav, Municipal Health Officer, MCD. Nine more people tested positive for dengue on Wednesday, taking the number of cases reported in the Capital to 1,054.

Three of the nine cases were from outside Delhi but were being treated here. According to the MCD, there have been two confirmed dengue deaths.

Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever are caused by one of four closely related virus serotypes called DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. All four are prevalent in India, including Delhi.

“This year, DEN-1 is the strain predominantly causing infections in Delhi, but the outbreak was caused by DEN-3 last year,” Yadav said. Since an infection with one of these serotypes does not provide cross-protective immunity, a persons living in Delhi can get four dengue infections in their lifetime.

“In fact, a person getting dengue for a second time is likely to develop more severe symptoms and disease than the first infection,” said Dr Susham Sharma, head of internal medicine, Max Healthcare. Infection can cause a range of symptoms, ranging from a non-specific viral fever to rash or severe haemorrhagic disease.

“Severity of symptoms depends not so much on the strain and serotype of the virus but the age, immune status and genetic predisposition of the patient,” said Dr Sharma, who added the number of dengue cases at Max Hospitals have shown a decline over the past two weeks. Since dengue infection causes symptoms of varying severity, mild infection can be easily missed.

“The platelet count falls only in 5-10 per cent cases, so physicians also need to watch out for haemoconcentration levels (to track fluid oozing out of blood into tissues) and signs of disordered coagulation. Strangely, even complications associated with dengue occur after the condition improves between 4 and 5 days, with rash appearing in 15-20 per cent cases,” Dr Sharma added.

In all, over 4,177 dengue cases and 49 deaths were reported from across the country till October 13 this year.

Macadamia tree can reduce more greenhouse gases

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Macadamia trees store more carbon than others and can be used to remove excess greenhouse gases from the earth’s atmosphere, according to a new research project.

The study, led by Graham Jones, associate professor at Centre for Regional Climate Change Studies of Southern Cross University, found that macadamia trees were able to store four tonnes of carbon dioxide per hectare per year, as against half a tonne emitted by the industry per hectare in the same period.

Across the industry, which consists of more than 900 growers who collectively farm 17,000 hectares in Queensland and northern New South Wales, this equates to around 68,000 tonnes of gross sequestration per year.

At $20 (Australian) per tonne this could be $1.36 million dollars per year to growers across the industry if they were able to claim it, according to a statement from Southern Cross University.

“This is a significant benefit in terms of carbon sequestration but it’s not recognised at the government and policy level,” Jones said. “This industry will be feeling the impact of increased energy prices, but at the moment horticulture is not included in the emissions trading scheme for 2010.”

The research was completed using 38 macadamia trees, each 23 years old, at Knockrow, supplied by Greg James at the Deenford macadamia farm near Ballina. The trees were measured, weighed and analysed for timber and carbon properties to determine the sequestration rate.

Jones said this research project had led to the development of a framework for measuring carbon sequestration which could now be used in other horticultural industries in Australia and elsewhere.

A rise in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is leading to climate change, which is adversely affecting farm output, leading to more frequent and more severe droughts, floods and storms and raising the sea level.

The sad truth is that there are a lot of simple office rules that require training if you want to make them stick. Some are just minor annoyances, but there are some subjects that really require good training.

Sexual harassment training is one area you want to commit some resources too. It is a sad fact, but men and women can both act quite immature at times. This can lead to a lot of unwanted flirtation and sexual advances. Any responsible company will do everything that they can to limit this. A sexual harassment suit can be devastating to a company on the financial front, but it is even worse for worker morale and self-esteem.

Another area that may require some resources is customer service training. Some groups don’t have to deal with the customers. They are the lucky bunch who are fairly immune to this need. Everyone else will probably be in contact with your important clients, and it is necessary that they behave in the proper manner so that no one is offended. Your customer service training doesn’t have to be extensive, even a simple course should drive the basic etiquette lessons home.

These simple courses can do wonders to advance your business and make it a safe and effective workplace. Check into your training options today.

Visual distress beacon lets screams be heard in space

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Scientists are developing an optical distress beacon for astronauts working outside their spacecraft, which would enable their screams for help to be heard in space in case of an emergency.

According to a report in New Scientist, the device could provide an alert if an astronaut is unable to speak or radio links fail.

The distress beacon will be attached to sensors monitoring heartbeat or breathing, and will have LEDs visible up to 800 meters away.

“The astronaut might even flash them to send messages in Morse code,” said Sarah Harris of Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, who is developing the device with staff at the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California.

Extra-vehicular activities are becoming more common.

In 2007, there were 23 EVAs involving International Space Station crew members, for example, more than double the figure for 2005.

Russia halts Google’s purchase of ad service

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Russian authorities have blocked Google Inc. from buying an online ad service.

Google said in July that it would spend $140 million to buy the ad service, ZAO Begun, from Rambler Media Ltd., which runs one of the most popular Web portals in Russia. Google had expected the deal to be finalized during the third quarter.

At the time, Google said the deal was part of its moves to improve service for users, partners and advertisers in Russia, which has a fast-growing digital advertising market.

In a statement Thursday, the Internet search leader said it was “very disappointed” that Russia’s Federal Anti-Monopoly Service, or FAS, decided to block the deal. Rambler also said in a notice on its Web site that the deal was rejected.

“At this time we are reviewing FAS’s decision. Once this process is complete, we will decide on our next steps,” Google said.

A brief statement by the Federal Anti-Monopoly Service did not elaborate on the reason for the rejection.

Global plan to tackle bird flu threat

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Efforts are on to have a global plan to tackle emerging infectious diseases like bird flu at an international ministerial conference on avian and pandemic influenza in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt.

The plan called the ‘One World, One Health (OW-OH)’ initiative, aims for an unprecedented integration of animal, human and ecosystem health issues to fight the threat of the avian flu virus H5N1.

A new report by Ian Scoones and Paul Forster of the ESRC STEPS Centre at the UK’s Institute of Development Studies (IDS) enunciated 10 key recommendations for OW-OH, based on lessons learned from the massive $2 billion global response to avian flu over the past five years, which has claimed 245 lives.

‘The ‘One World, One Health’ initiative is a radical departure from the conventional sectoral approaches to health. It is essential, but presents many challenges. We have identified 10 challenges for the way ahead and urge ministers to rethink rather than repackage their measures,’ said Scoones.

Over the last decade, the bird flu virus, H5N1, has spread across most of Asia and Europe and parts of Africa. In some countries - including Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Egypt - the disease has become endemic.

Somewhere, some time, a new emerging infectious disease will have major impacts, given changing disease ecologies and patterns of urbanisation and climate change, according to an IDS press release.

In many countries pandemic contingency and preparedness plans have been devised. Yet coordination at country level has been found wanting; rivalries between professions and organisations persist; and funding and capacities for an effective and equitable global responses to a pandemic remain weak.

The themes addressed in this report are being explored as part of a project on avian influenza policy responses in Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. They are central to the ESRC Centre’s research programme on ecology, politics, policy and pathways to sustainability.

Researchers developing more powerful versatile vaccine

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

A versatile vaccine that would treat a broad spectrum of maladies, including 2,500 strains of salmonella, and protect the elderly may be possible in the not-too-distant future.

University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) scientists Douglas Heithoff and Michael Mahan — along with their Utah University counterparts Elena Enioutina, Diana Bareyan and Raymond Daynes detailed the path to creating a vaccine that confers protection against multiple strains of bacteria.

The team focused on developing a vaccine against Salmonella, which causes food and blood poisoning — with over 1.5 million cases in the US each year. “It’s endemic worldwide,” Mahan said. “It’s not a carnivore issue — it’s everybody’s issue since fruits and vegetables are often the source of infection.”

By disarming a “genetic switch,” the research team has developed a vaccine that protects against many strains of Salmonella. The new vaccine stimulates the production of antibodies and immune cells that work together to kill bacteria.

“Vaccines are great,” Mahan said. “Second to water sanitation, they are the best medical invention of mankind.” The problem with conventional vaccines is that they only protect against a limited number of closely related strains.

“That is why flu vaccines need to be administered every year because different flu strains arise every year,” Mahan said. This is what prompted the researchers to begin their quest for a more powerful vaccine that conferred protection against many strains.

Also, the vaccine does not induce a specific class of inhibitory immune cells that are known to contribute to immune declines in cancer patients. This lack of “immune suppression” is an advantage of the new vaccine over conventional vaccines, said a UCSB release.

The researchers also showed a link between the immune declines observed in cancer patients and those occurring as part of the normal aging process. “This may explain why the elderly are more susceptible to infection and why they are more difficult to effectively vaccinate,” Mahan said.

These findings are to be published in the November edition of Infection.
