Now, a machine that will make wine hangovers history
Monday, December 29th, 2008Even the most cautious wine drinkers wake up with what one can call post-Christmas hangovers. But a new invention by a South African company provides a magical cure to the headache, nausea and shaking associated with excessive drinking.
What’s more, the technology improves the taste of the drink in the process.
Headaches after drinking wine are usually caused by sulphites - sulphur dioxide added to the bottle to kill off unwanted microbes and yeasts and limit oxidation.
Now, a new machine by L’Ormarins, near Stellenbosch in the Western Cape wineland, work towards reducing greatly the volume of sulphites by using ultraviolet rays to do the job.
Called Surepure, the technology is being tested by a many South African wine estates including Steenberg, Alluvia Stellar Organics, Clarius, Bouchard Finlayson and L’Ormarins, as well as winemakers in California, Chile, New Zealand and Australia.
According to Neil Patterson, cellar master at L’Ormarins, a wine that is almost free of sulphites cannot come too soon.
Patterson has a sulphur intolerance, causing blotchiness around his eyes, and was looking for a solution before hearing about Surepure.
“I’m lucky that I work for someone who is keen to embrace new technology. The use of sulphites in wine is a problem. It does control microbacterial activity and prevents oxidation but it also kills nonharmful elements which can add to the taste and flavour of a wine,” Times Online quoted Patterson, 28, as saying.
Guy Kebble, CEO of Surepure, said: “We think this will change the way wine is made. It is a conservative industry but people’s attitudes to sulphites and demands for a healthier diet and lifestyle are making winemakers look at alternatives.”
Roughly the size of two fridge-freezers, the new machine, has wine piped in and out through two pipes, while the passing liquid is exposed to UV-ray lamps.
This way, Surepure can process 4,000 litres in an hour and the process can be repeated as many times as the winemaker wants.
“Using this technology we can cut down the need for sulphites and improve the quality of our wine,” said Patterson.

Power of PowerPoint
Sunday, December 28th, 2008Whenever there is a seminar or a symposium we immediately think of PowerPoint presentations. Power point presentations are very commonly used nowadays for presentations and the software has its own advantages. We always feel pictures talk more than words. PowerPoint presentations allow people to depict their ideas in sequence of pictures displayed as slides. Power point presentation need not be always picture but can also contain the subjects in points which enable people to read it clearly than giving them in congested paragraphs. One more added merit is the animation feature of the PowerPoint presentations where we just need to set the timing after which the slides should change and it is done automatically. Also there are styles and fonts and templates available already based on the presentation and situation where you are going to present it. PowerPoint presentation makes the presentation job easier. Nowadays sophisticated multimedia facilities are available along with Power Point presentations to make life easier. You can add pictures and quotes from books and add it directly to the presentations and make it more informative instead of typing each and every word or drawing the picture all by yourself. You just need to add your creativity and ideas to make the presentations more lively and interactive.

Japanese group asks Google to stop map service
Friday, December 19th, 2008A group of Japanese lawyers and professors asked on Friday that Google Inc stop providing detailed street-level images of Japanese cities on the Internet, saying they violated privacy rights.
Google’s Street View offers ground-level, 360-degree views of streets in 12 Japanese cities and is also offered for some 50 cities in the United States and certain areas in Europe.
The service allows Web users to drive down a street, in a virtual sense, using their mouse to adjust views of roadside scenery.
“We strongly suspect that what Google has been doing deeply violates a basic right that humans have,” Yasuhiko Tajima, a professor of constitutional law at Sophia University in Tokyo, told Reuters by telephone.
“It is necessary to warn society that an IT giant is openly violating privacy rights, which are important rights that the citizens have, through this service.”
The Campaign Against Surveillance Society, a Japanese civilian group that Tajima heads, wants Google to stop providing its Street View service of Japanese cities and delete all saved images.
Google’s office in Tokyo was unable to comment immediately.
Privacy concerns about Google’s service have grown in Japanese media, especially after some people discovered their images on Street View.
Similar concerns have been raised in other parts of the world, including the United States and Europe.
In one case, a woman was shown sunbathing and in another a man was pictured exiting a strip club in San Francisco.
In March, Google said it would comply with a Pentagon request to remove some online images from Street View over fears they posed a security threat to U.S. military bases.
Web-based Google Maps and a related computer-based service called Google Earth have drawn criticism from a variety of countries for providing images of sensitive locations, such as military bases or potential targets of terror attacks.
Research on stem cells drug testing predicted to boom under Obama
Thursday, December 18th, 2008Embryonic stem cells could be a viable and effective alternative for testing drugs for dangerous side effects, according to a leading British researcher.
Christine Mummery, Professor of Developmental Biology at Leiden University Medical Centre in The Netherlands, has predicted that what is currently a small and sparsely funded research area will boom in coming years under US President-elect Barack Obama, who is an ardent supporter of stem cell research.
Mummery said that it typically costs 1 billion dollars and takes 10 years to get a new drug to market. Before any tests or trials take place on patients, millions of chemical compounds are tested on cells in the laboratory, in a bid to detect adverse effects.
For potential drugs to treat heart disease various cell types are used for the preliminary screening - but in the second round of testing, heart cells are necessary. At the moment the only way to do this is using heart cells from animals.
However, Mummery believes that since researchers are able to make unlimited human heart cells from embryonic stem cells, they offer a viable and scientifically exciting alternative.
“Many drugs meant to treat other complaints also have side effects on the heart, sometimes with fatal consequences. There are recent examples of drugs being withdrawn from the market because they caused sudden cardiac death in some patients,” she said.
“Regulators now require that drugs be tested for potential effects on the heart before going to market. At present the pharmaceutical industry has no alternative but to do this using heart cells from animals.
“With the research that is now on-going in several parts of the world, including the UK, we believe using human heart cells from human embryonic stem cells can become a good and viable alternative. From a scientific point of view, it makes much more sense to use human stem cells to model human hearts,” she added.
Mummery presented her views at the British Pharmacological Society’s Winter Meeting in Brighton.
One dead as storms hit Dorset
Tuesday, December 16th, 2008One motorist died as high winds, torrential rain and flash floods lashed southwest England on Saturday as nearly 100 flood warnings were imposed across the region.
A 22-year-old woman died in the county of Dorset when her car crashed off the road in heavy rain. It is thought her car may have aquaplaned.
Some roads in the counties of Devon and Somerset were submerged under 46 centimetres (18 inches) of water. Thirty people were rescued from their vehicles and homes.
A reduced train service was operating between London and the southwest, with some services between the capital and the region’s main cities suspended.
The Environment Agency authority has 247 flood warnings in place, with 99 in the southwest, 46 in the English Midlands and 30 in Wales.
However, Sunday is set to be largely rain-free and the worst weather conditions have already passed through, forecaster MeteoGroup UK said.
