What are the essentials to buy for my baby?

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

I know the essentials like diapers, wipes, crib, & a safety monitor. What else should I buy. So much stuff out there is just for marketing purposes. I want to buy the best for the baby, but I don’t want to be led on my marketing.

I’d suggest visiting consumerreports.org. They have a great baby check list available, plus you can get their top reviews on all baby items.

diapers, wipes, a crib, a saftey monitor… good you got the first most important ones!

right, now a baby bouncer chair is brilliant! my nephews LIVED in theres… they can eat, sleep and just sit in it. it also bounces slightly which is good for getting them to sleep or for them to play.
having a toy across i will provide them with entertainment which will also help thier development. It is good for when they are a little baby, up intill they start to crawl.
heres an example-

secondly, a changing mat.
not only does this mean you can change them on a clean surface, but its also easy to wipe when you have…accidents, but it is also good for them to lie on and explore thier feet and toes :)
when they start to lie on their stomach, this also means that they are on a safe clean surface.

a push chair is also good. mothers and babys should go for walks to get fresh air and have time bonding together out of the confidment of home.
if you have a car, a push chair with a built in car seat is brilliant! it saves money and is easier.
with this sort it genrally means that as you walk, the baby will be facing you, which is nicer for you both.
an exapmle-

with this pushchair, ALWAYS HAVE A PARASOL.
white is the best colour as it reflects light ans heat, dont be tempted to buy black which will absorb the heat.
this may not seem essential, but trust me, it is.
even on a rather cloudy day, you may get caught in the sun which can cause sun burn, and restless sleep.

Dummy/ Diddy/ Pacifier
so many names, for such a great invention!
it imatates the feeling of the mothers nipples/ bottles teat, so when you are feeding your baby, as they are alling asleep you cn place this in their mouth and they will carry on sucking peacefully. Even as they get a bit older, the comfort of it will aid sleep. make sure you get the correct one for thier age group though.
(they also can come with a built in rattle for fun, glow in the dark for finding at night times- that is VERY handy! and cute designs)
for example-

lots and lots of bibs! they dribble like hell (i love babies, but seriously, they do).
if you leave it to dribble down their neck when feeding, it can cause a rash and be uncomfortable for them. this may also result in you having to change thier babygro whilst they sleep which is unnessacery. just buy alot of them, and when you feed them, place it under thier chin and around on side of their neck (the side it dribbles from) all wadded up. Dont bother actually fastening it around thier neck intill they are weaning.

Lastly, a MOSES BASKET.
i know, i know… you have a crib.
but that is static, yes? only in one room, yes?
what about when you dont want to go up and down stairs everytime they cry/ need feeding/ need changing?
thats why you have a moses basket.
its like a protable crib, that is small, comforable (my nephew prefered it to his crib), and you can tak it anywhere.
you can sit in the garden, have a bath, wath TV in the living room. ANYWHERE.
this also means that if they fall asleep down stairs, and you are worried about waking them when you go to bed, you can just leave them in their basket, rather than disturb them and put them in thier crib.

all these things are simple, cost-friendly, and sometimes looked over.

hope i helped, i am not actually a mother myself, im just a 17 year old who has looked after and loved her nephews alot!
if you need help again, jus email me :)

good luck, and if you are still in doubt, read this-

My son will not hold his spoon/fork the right way?

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

He is 3.8 years old and I have been trying to help him to hold his spoon right. He still grabs it like a fist backwards type of hold if you know what i mean. I want him to hold it right because of learning to write with a pencil also. any ideas to get him to hold it right? I help him everytime he eats but goes back to the old way of holding his spoon/fork.

I work at a daycare and I see children who are even 4-5 who can’t hold their forks and spoons correctly. It takes time. I wouldn’t worry.

——–

I wouldn’t worry about it. Let him feed himself his own way and when he’s hungry he’ll figure out the best way to get food in. Sit with him to draw and write with big crayons or washable markers and let him see the way you hold the crayon and draw things for him and write his name. Don’t scold him or correct him, just draw and write with him a little every day. Don’t turn it into a battle, eventually his grip will straighten out. He won’t be eating like that in the college cafeteria!

Expectant mothers who may be having multiples?

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25572207/

I happen to be a twin myself & don’t like it one bit. It has nothing to do with my twin brother as such, but I was the one whom got the shorter end of the stick, resulting in a life sentence for me of disability and bereavement of the joys of life. something for U would be mothers to think about.Yes!?

What’s your point? What is it that expectant mothers should be thinking about? Most women who are pregnant with multiples are painfully aware of what can go wrong. I am thankful every day that my children are healthy, but if a child is born with a disability what can be done except to accept it and try to make the best life possible? I really don’t understand what the point of this question is.

——

You think that your lifetime of unhappiness is the fault of the fact that you were a twin? Have you ever thought that mayne it could be your attitude? How odd. Why would you scare mothers to be like that? THat’s just rude. As if they didn’t have enough to worry about.

What has your ob/gyn told you NOT to eat while pregnant?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

My midwife told me to use common sense. She told me about bad stuff (lunch meat, undercooked meats, eggs, unwashed produce, raw fish, etc) but she also told me to be smart about it.

When was the last time you heard about lunch meat or eggs getting someone sick in the US? When was the last time you heard of any women in the US getting sick from any foods during pregnancy? If you want to eat a sandwich, eat a sandwich. Just don’t buy your meat at Aldis a day before it expires. Ask the lady behind the meat counter to clean the slicer for you and then slice your meat if it makes you feel better.

If you like sushi, have sushi. Sushi in the US is frozen and shipped. Freezing kills most everything. Choose the pricier restaurant instead of eating sushi on a buffet. Common sense stuff.

——–

pretty much anything raw, like sushi or rare burgers (bacteria isn’t so easily handled by a baby and carries risks), certain cheeses that cultivate mold, coffee (not completely, but in large amounts), diet sodas, processed foods like lunch meats, fast food (again, try to limit your intake), some kinds of fish (salmon, swordfish, shellfish like oysters). What to Expect When You’re Expecting has a great rundown of every kind of food and whether or not they are safe during pregnancy, as well as a guide to eating out. Docs might also tell you to avoid spicy food because of the heartburn, but not all women experience this while pregnant.

What would be the rate to charge someone for babysitting their child?

Friday, June 6th, 2008

My sisters friend would like for me to watch her 2 year old from 5 pm to 12 am 5 days a week, saturdays she may have to work intill close (she works at Taco Bell)…. I have had alot of experience watching children, the problem is I am in the middle of finding a job so if I choose to take this job I need to make enough to live off, I am getting ready to go away to college so I still live at home but I am wanting to save as much money as possible, but since she does only work at taco bell what is the right price to charge?

Charge at least whatever is the going rate in your area for daycare. Up to you if you want an extra percentage for night work.

What you are doing is not babysitting. It is considered daycare and you have to report it for your taxes, because you better believe she will to get the child care credit!

———

I usually give 10$ per hour to my babysitter, but it is only some hours a week. In your case you need to decide a lump-sum. The good thing is that you can have a second job during the day, since you start at 5pm. You could probably charge something around 150$ a week, more or less, it is not that much but I don’t think she could afford more than 600 dollars a month…

Shop Boutiques for One of a Kind Maternity Clothes

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

If you love style then you will want to look stylish while you are pregnant, too. The easiest way to do this is to shop a boutique maternity store. A boutique pregnancy store will have a wide variety of clothes for you to choose from that will not only be beautiful but that will also flatter your pregnancy figure. You should keep in mind that many stores sell maternity clothing that look good. However, if you want to wear maternity clothes that not everyone else is wearing then you will want to shop at specialty boutiques. Keep in mind that your clothes will look beautiful but they will not be affordable. So, you will need to keep your budget open for these beautiful clothes. For some people who are on a tight budget this is not an option. So, for these individuals it is recommended to buy one or two outfits from a specialty boutique they can wear to special events. Then, the other clothes can be average priced items that look good, too, but are more affordable. You can look beautiful and stylish during your pregnancy no matter your budget.
